Tuff Sound Recording (TSR) is a spacious and and modern recording facility that features expert engineers; high quality digital and analog equipment; and integration with a 2000 square foot rehearsal/performance space.
TSR is located in a former industrial building in the Point Breeze neighborhood of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. Load ins are simple with free and ample parking within close proximity to our freight elevator. Our studio space and control room is designed to high acoustic specifications by Greg Vizza of Vizzacoustics. The 1200 square foot studio suite includes a multi-purpose work area, lounge and kitchen. Housing for clients is also available with a fully furnished private apartment just 8 blocks from the studio.
Studio Owner and Head Engineer, Herman Pearl, has recorded, created, and performed music for over 25 years. He specializes in hybrid electronic and analog recording, mixing and sound design. His clients include Jasiri X, Mac Miller, Vanessa German, Kyle Abraham, and many more (for an extensive list check out our Clients & Collaborators page).
Tuff Sound Recording features high quality analog and digital gear, including a large modular synthesizer system integrated into our workflow. Our close working relationship with Pittsburgh Modular Synthesizers (located in the same building) allows us to bring in any modular process, as well as a range of vintage analog synthesizers.
Our sister-organization, PearlArts Studios is also located in our building, offering a 2000 square foot dance and art studio. This rehearsal/performance space is available to our clients, and is equipped with a 16 channel sound system, a sprung dance floor, and fully programmable LED lighting.
